Course Description
Participants will examine how trauma, fear, and acute stress disrupt normal brain functioning, creating communication barriers and impairing decision‑making. The course clearly defines the differences between the normal brainand the trauma brain, helping telecommunicators recognize how callers think, react, and communicate during crisis. Attendees will also explore how these changes present across different age groups, with emphasis on developmental, cognitive, and behavioral variations in youth, adults, and older adults.
Key Topics Covered
Brain Function in Crisis — How trauma and stress impair executive functioning, emotional regulation, and communication.
Normal Brain vs. Trauma Brain — Practical explanations of how callers process information differently during crisis.
Age‑Based Behavioral Differences — How children, teens, adults, and older adults experience and express suicidal ideation or mental distress.
Mental Health Diagnoses & Crisis Indicators — Overview of common mental health conditions and how they may present during emergency calls.
Substance Abuse & Co‑Occurring Crises — Understanding how intoxication or withdrawal complicates communication and risk assessment.
Communication Barriers — Techniques for navigating callers who are panicked, incoherent, withdrawn, non‑verbal, or experiencing cognitive delays.
Suicidal Ideation Recognition — Identifying verbal cues, behavioral indicators, and risk factors that signal escalating danger.
Calming & Grounding Techniques — Repeatable strategies to stabilize callers and reduce emotional intensity.
Active Listening Skill Development — Strengthening the ability to hear meaning, emotion, and risk indicators while maintaining control.
De‑Escalation Techniques — Applying proven crisis‑intervention methods to callers experiencing suicidal despair.
Telecommunicator Self‑Care & Resilience — Understanding the emotional impact of suicidal and crisis calls, recognizing signs of secondary trauma, and developing healthy coping strategies to protect long‑term mental wellness.
Self‑Care & Resilience Focus
Because suicidal and mental health crisis calls can be emotionally taxing, this course includes dedicated instruction on telecommunicator self‑care. Attendees will learn:
How repeated exposure to trauma affects the brain and body.
Techniques to reduce cumulative stress after difficult calls.
Strategies to maintain emotional boundaries while still providing compassionate care.
Methods for recognizing burnout, compassion fatigue, and vicarious trauma.
Practical tools to support long‑term resilience and mental health.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, attendees will be able to:
Distinguish how trauma alters brain function and caller behavior.
Apply age‑appropriate communication strategies during suicidal or mental health crisis calls.
Recognize signs of suicidal ideation and escalating emotional distress.
Use active listening and de‑escalation techniques to stabilize callers and reduce risk.
Navigate communication barriers with clarity, patience, and purpose.
Support callers experiencing mental health or substance‑related crises while maintaining telecommunicator safety and emotional boundaries.
Implement self‑care practices that protect their own mental health and reduce the impact of secondary trauma.
Guide callers more efficiently through crisis moments to improve outcomes for both the caller and responding units.
This course empowers telecommunicators with deeper understanding, refined communication skills, and a broadened perspective on how to support individuals in suicidal despair or mental health crisis—while also safeguarding their own well‑being.
